Thyroid aur diet: kya khayein, kya na khayein (with English)

Thyroid disorders โ€” particularly hypothyroidism โ€” are extremely common in India, affecting an estimated 42 million people. Yet the diet advice is often confusing, contradictory, or simply wrong for Indian eating habits.

Sabse pehle: kya khayein? (What to eat first?)

Iodine-rich foods: Your thyroid needs iodine to make hormones. Use iodized salt (most packaged salt is now iodized in India). Sea fish like mackerel and sardines are excellent if you eat non-veg.

Selenium: Found in eggs, mushrooms, and small amounts in sunflower seeds. Selenium helps your body convert thyroid hormone (T4) to the active form (T3).

Zinc: Dal, rajma, chana, pumpkin seeds, and cashews all provide zinc, which supports thyroid function.

Iron: Low iron is common in Indian women and directly affects thyroid. Include palak, methi, rajma, and liver (if non-veg).

Vitamin D: Deficiency worsens thyroid autoimmunity. Get 20 minutes of morning sun and eat eggs, fatty fish, and fortified foods.

Kya na khayein ya simit karein? (What to avoid or limit?)

Goitrogens are the most confusing topic. These are compounds in certain foods that can interfere with thyroid hormone production โ€” but only in large raw quantities.

Goitrogenic foods include: gobhi (cauliflower), patta gobhi (cabbage), broccoli, soya, radish (mooli), and millet (bajra in large amounts).

The important nuance: cooking destroys most goitrogenic compounds. Eating cooked gobhi or cabbage in normal Indian meal quantities is completely fine for most hypothyroid patients. Only if you are eating huge raw amounts โ€” like juicing raw cabbage daily โ€” is it a concern.

Soya is the main one to genuinely limit. Tofu, soya milk, and soya protein powders can interfere with thyroid medication absorption. Avoid eating soya within 4 hours of your thyroid medicine (usually thyroxine).

Thyroid medication: the most important food rule

Thyroxine (Thyronorm, Eltroxin) must be taken on an empty stomach, 30โ€“60 minutes before eating, with plain water only. Not chai. Not milk. Not fruit juice. This single habit affects medication absorption more than any food you eat all day.

Calcium supplements and antacids also block thyroxine absorption โ€” take them at a 4-hour gap.

Sample thyroid-friendly Indian day

Morning (before medicine): Plain water only. Take thyroid medicine. Wait 30 minutes.

Breakfast: Moong dal chilla with vegetables, or oats upma, or 2 boiled eggs with whole wheat toast.

Lunch: 2 whole wheat roti + sabzi (any cooked vegetable is fine) + dal + small bowl curd.

Snack: Handful of mixed nuts, or fruit with peanut butter.

Dinner: Light khichdi or 1 roti + dal + sabzi.

Every thyroid patient is different โ€” medication doses, weight, other conditions, and lab values all affect what works. A dietitian who understands thyroid physiology can build a plan that works alongside your medication. That is what we do at SwasthaFit.
